Zdravije sviranje

Iskrivljeno držanje gudala, položaj prstiju lijeve ruke, stajanje… sve to vodi u otežano napredovanje, a u brojnim slučajevima, na žalost i do ozbiljnih zdravstvenih poteškoća. Upravo tu su nam naši profesori zlata vrijedni – njihovo upozoravanje i popravljanje vodi nas ka zdravijem sviranju. No, što kada ostanemo sami?

2. Koljena trebaju biti fleksibilna, noge opuštene. Zamislimo da sjedimo na lopti za pilates.

3. Leđa trebaju biti uspravna. Zamislimo da smo naslonjeni na zid.

Healthier playing

Many times we end up being preoccupied with so much factors we have to look for while practicing particular piece (notes, rhythm, intonation, fingerings, bowing, dynamics …) that we often forget about the most important thing – proper posture. Wrong bow hold, left hand fingers position, standing… all this leads to difficult progress, and in many cases, unfortunately, to serious health problems. That’s why our teachers are so precious – their warning and fixing leads us to healthier playing. But what happens when we stay alone? Exercising at home is the most important part of our music journey because we spend the most of our time in it, so how can we help ourselves to make it the best possible?

Posture Checkup

The healthiest thing you can do for your violin playing is that before you start playing every single time, which implies EVERY stop during your practice, you check your posture.

Here are 10 steps that are essential for a proper posture:

1. The feet should be in shoulder width apart, stable, body weight evenly distributed on both feet. Let’s imagine laying the roots in the floor like a tree.

2. The knees should be flexible, legs relaxed. Imagine sitting on a Pilates ball.

3. The back should be upright. Let’s imagine we’re leaning against the wall.

4. The neck is relaxed and the head is laid on it. Let’s imagine that we are a puppet on a string and that one thread keeps our head up.

5. The head resting on the chinrest. The feeling should be the same as when we sit, resting elbows on the knees and our head on the palms.

6. The shoulders are relaxed, we feel gravity.

7. The scroll is in the same height as our nose, the left thumb is relaxed, the wrist is straight, the fingers are correctly positioned.

8. The right elbow is the same height as the stich of the bow, and relaxed

9. Right hand fingers are properly positioned on the bow, the hand is relaxed

10. The bow is properly placed on the string, with good contact.

These 10 steps are great for ALL viola and violin players, from full beginner to virtuoso, equally for small children as well as for adults. It is possible to add certain details, depending on the need and / or the technique that you currently work on.

For this checkup to be regular, but also quicker and simpler, here is a free printable you can stick to the bar of your music stand. By looking at it, just go through steps 1-10 and eventually fix what is needed (and we always need to fix something).

You can download the graphic here. If you print black&white, be sure to color the numbers with very bright color so they could stand out.
